How Warm Mothering Studio began
The studio grew from years spent living in a third-floor New Town flat where afternoon light slid across sandstone walls for only a few bright hours. We learned that family comfort depends as much on curtain weight and sofa depth as on paint colour.
Warm Mothering Studio opened on Howe Street so neighbours in Stockbridge and across the New Town could walk in, sit with samples, and talk honestly about how rooms feel at breakfast and at bedtime.
Reading Edinburgh’s northern light
Edinburgh’s latitude means winter interiors can feel grey if finishes are chosen from magazines shot in southern sun. We build palettes that stay warm under overcast skies and still look fresh when summer evenings stretch late.
Every scheme is checked against window aspect: north-facing reception rooms need reflective soft whites; west-facing kitchens can carry deeper greens and ochres without closing in.
Tenement life and sandstone character
Shared stairs, high ceilings, and original floorboards ask for furniture that respects circulation and acoustics. We specify rugs that quiet footsteps for downstairs neighbours and storage that keeps hallways clear for prams and scooters.
Sandstone façades outside set a quiet tone we often echo indoors with mineral paints and linen that age gently rather than chase trends.
Climate that shapes material choices
Scottish damp and central heating swings demand textiles that breathe and timber finishes that do not crack with the seasons. We favour natural fibres, washable covers, and finishes proven in local homes rather than showroom-only surfaces.
Outdoor kit—coats, wellies, school bags—gets dedicated landing zones so living rooms stay soft places to gather.
